Sign Permits

A sign permit is required prior to installing both permanent and temporary signs.   Temporary Signs A temporary sign is a sign intended for use for relatively short periods of time. Such signs will now require a permit before being posted. They may be posted for up to 90 days per calendar year per business in either 3, 7, 15, 30 or 60 consecutive day periods or 30 or 60 non-consecutive day periods. There is no limit on the number of temporary signs that may be posted at any one time. However, the total square footage of all signs combined may not exceed 48 square feet in sign area. No individual sign may exceed 16 square feet in sign area, exceed 6 feet in height, and be a minimum distance of 3 feet from property lines.

In addition, no sign is allowed to be placed in the public right of way, or placed on private property without the owner's consent.

*Charitable institutions and entities are exempt from temporary permit fees.

*Commercial real estate signs are exempt from temporary permit fees.


Permanent Signs: All permanent signs placed outdoors or in windows must receive a permit before it can be displayed. Permanent Sign Criteria is based on property, zoning, and location in the city. For more information, please contact the Community Development Department at 913-676-8360.

  • New Signs: $25.00, plus $1.50 per square foot or fraction thereof of projected sign surface area.
  • Refacing: $25.00, plus $.50 per square foot or fraction thereof of projected sign surface area.

Sign Installer

All sign installers and contractors must have a current occupational license with Community Development.
