Planning + Zoning staff are responsible for evaluating and recommending periodic revisions to Mission’s Municipal Code, Comprehensive Plan and Design Guidelines. The plans that direct how development shapes the community’s future are listed here.
Guiding Documents
- Mission’s Comprehensive Plan, Tomorrow Together, outlines the City’s development goals and aspirations and serves as a guide for developing Mission as a vibrant and evolving community. A zoning code update will follow to support the goals and objectives of the comprehensive plan.

- A corridor plan and citywide bicycle/pedestrian plan have been adopted to support the comprehensive plan. These are the Rock Creek Corridor Plan: Downtown to East Gateway, and the Mission Connections Plan.
- The Design Guidelines for the Johnson Drive Corridor provide a specific vision for Mission’s downtown business district and surrounding commercial areas.
- The West Gateway Form Based Code provides a block-by-block vision as well as design guidelines for the development of Mission’s West Gateway Sector.
- The East Gateway Redevelopment Plan provides guidance for land use, density and design for the area where Mission, Roeland Park, and Fairway meet.
The City’s Municipal Code outlines the legal requirements and procedures that govern development and land use within the city.
