On Monday night the Council took action to terminate the redevelopment agreement for the Mission Gateway project. The City issued a notice of default on May 15, 2023, for failure to timely pay real estate taxes and assessments, and the developer was given 60 days to cure the default. Mayor Flora commented that, “The developer failed to take advantage of that opportunity and the Council felt strongly that it was appropriate to terminate the redevelopment agreement; that agreement captured the details of the public/private incentives that were negotiated and finalized in January 2023.”
Mayor Flora went on to say, “This Council and others over the last 17+ years have demonstrated a willingness to work cooperatively with the developer to bring a project to fruition, but it was time for the City to take a step back and evaluate our options. I can speak with confidence in saying that the Council is open to reviewing and evaluating public/private partnerships going forward.” During the meeting Mayor Flora also communicated that, “While the redevelopment agreement has been terminated, the City does not own or control the site. I know our residents and businesses, along with the Council, want to see something develop, but the action taken by the Council on Monday doesn’t accelerate any development timeframe.”
