Ongoing Utility Relocations Throughout the City
March 14, 2025

When cities undertake street restoration projects, one of the key steps that often precedes the work is utility relocation. This process is crucial for ensuring that the infrastructure can support both the current and future needs of the community. Utilities such as water, gas, electricity, and communication lines may need to be moved or upgraded to align with the new street design, improve drainage, or meet safety standards. By relocating utilities ahead of time, cities can streamline the construction process, avoid unexpected delays, and ensure that their infrastructure remains safe and efficient. Ultimately, utility relocation is an essential step that allows cities to not only enhance the street’s functionality but also plan for long-term growth and development.

The following areas will be impacted by utility relocation work in the coming weeks:

Johnson Drive: Starting in March of 2025, utility agencies will be upgrading their infrastructure in preparation for the 2026 C.A.R.S. project. This work may involve repairs, relocations, and system enhancements to help ensure that once Johnson Drive is reconstructed, there will be no need to disturb the new roadway for future utility issues. As a result of this utility work, drivers may experience changes in traffic patterns along Johnson Drive and nearby side streets.

63rd Street Between Nall Avenue and Roe Avenue: WaterOne is currently replacing a water main ahead of the 2025 C.A.R.S Project. Kansas Gas is additionally working in the area to replace the gas main. Each project is anticipated to be completed in twelve weeks, around the beginning of May. Traffic delays and detours may be expected. For more information regarding each respective, please reach out to the contact information below. WaterOne: 913-895-1800 or  WaterOne Kansas Gas: 800-794-4780 or Kansas Gas Service

Ahead of the 2025 Street Preservation Project, utility work is being completed at the following locations: 61st Street (Broadmoor to Barkley) : WaterOne and Kansas Gas are each currently replacing mains. 62nd (Lamar to Glenwood): Utility work is still underway. Reeds (Johnson and 58th): Utility work has not begun, but should be moving forward near the end of April.

Other Projects: Roe Avenue: Traffic signal foundations are being actively drilled as part of the 2024 C.A.R.S project. A new traffic signal will be installed around May of this year.
